We’ll Find Happiness
Synopsis
WE’LL FIND HAPPINESS tells the story of Saad, a young Moroccan exile in Quebec, who will do anything to save the man he loves, an Iranian refugee facing deportation and likely death. In a desperate move, Saad tries to seduce a high-ranking spokesperson from the Ministry of Immigration. This risky gambit sets off a chain of events that are as intimate as they are political, where every decision carries consequences far beyond matters of the heart.

In WE’LL FIND HAPPINESS, we turn our attention to one of the many countries where being homosexual is essentially a death sentence. From the very first scenes, Michel Marc Bouchard establishes the film’s stakes with unflinching clarity through the character of Reza, an Iranian man. The film is built around him and the danger he faces should he be forced to return to his country. And although his character remains in the background of the narrative, he is its driving force. The film’s main character, Saad, is a young Moroccan man who dreams of a better life and longs to escape poverty without having to resort to prostitution. He also wishes to live his homosexuality freely—an impossibility in a country where it is illegal and punishable by imprisonment. The film also explores class tensions through the ambiguous relationship between Saad and Laurent, the communications officer for the Minister of Immigration. Torn between fighting to save Reza and the pull of a world just out of reach, Saad embodies the complexity of this inner conflict. Laurent, for his part, finds the comfort and stability of his career shaken by the love he feels for Saad. – Léa Pool
